Dear Friends: Thank you Marsha Walker for pointing out a new trend supported by our competitors. We've had nursing mothers groups for 50 years or more....but they aren't funded and don't recruit the way that industry can. How can we compete with freebies without legal safeguards? For one thing, speaking the truth. In my talks to healthcare professionals, there is always mention of the risks of formula and of how industry (like tobacco companies) doesn't want the truth about their product to be told....who would purchase a product that increases your baby's chance of getting diabetes or lung disease? I've had success with asking audiences of healthcare professionals why on earth would a woman breastfeed when the staff in the white coats are giving away free samples and using formula if the baby is hypoglycemic or having a hearing test or is in the nursery? When you ask that question, give people 10 seconds to think. Don't answer it yourself. Res ipsa loquitur, the thing speaks for itself. As for pumping with nipple shields, my understanding of the physiology has led me to recommend pumping 3 to 4 times a day in addition to breastfeeding (with shield) for at least 8 times a day for the first two weeks of lactation.......so all the prolactin receptors car be primed. After that 2 weeks, the mother could gradually reduce her pumping based on baby's output and weight gain. What say all you wise ones? warmly, Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI craniosacral therapy practitioner www.breastfeedingalwaysbest.com *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html To reach list owners: [log in to unmask] Mail all list management commands to: [log in to unmask] COMMANDS: 1.
