I have a client second day post c/section birth. Baby has his hands tight to his face. All ultrasounds his hands were tight to his face, feet crossed. Receding chin with sl arch in palate. Mom's nipples are slightly flat erect with stimulation but even with pumping to do not extend out very far to meet with palate. He holds his tongue back. He will latch to a pacifier and finger. Makes good peristalic tongue movements with finger feeding. I have been afraid to introduce a bottle because I think it will be over with once he gets the fast flow of a bottle nipple. He screams and pushes the breast away. He won't latch to a nipple shield. I tried a feeding tube with the nipple shield in the corner of his mouth and only once would he let this happen. I have had twice that he briefly latched took two sucks mom yelled out a hurray and he was done. He even arches his back to get away. He will allow mom to finger feed or use feeding tube with pacifier. I and Dad feel that he doesn't like anything in his personal space. He will do skin to skin but sleeps or bobs his head up and down around her chest will bob off and on the nipple or nipple shield but just won't latch. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Please send private email or posting is fine.
