Isn't this really close to inorganic FTT? The baby fails to grow, even with adequate calorie intake, because of inattention. I was born in Germany in 1956 and the orphanage I was in (0 - 18 months) had a large number of infants die in the "post war period" -- (I would not consider 1956 post war) There were just too many babies for the staff. Anyway, I remember being interviewed by a clinical researcher [when I was a teenager]. Apparently, he was looking into the "strengths" of the babies who survived. I believe he concluded there was something unusual about the surviving babies, that got them more attention -- I had bright, red, curly hair as an infant. (That interview was so many years ago, I had almost forgotten it.) But red hair may not have been the entire story with me. I found out several years later, that my birth mother would come and visit or take me home. From a letter I found when my adoptive mother died, I learned that my birth mother came back looking for me when I was about 2 years old. The letter had been written to assure my adoptive parents that she wasn't told anything about where I was. I cannot comprehend just leaving a baby to itself all day (and night in this baby's case). The lack of nurturing must devastate the psyche. So very sad.
