Naomi, did you get your info > off their website (and if so, why can't I find it?) > > http://www.breastmilkproject.org/op_prolacta.php > > Rachel Myr > Kristiansand, Norway On their web page on Haiti (click on the the banner photo on their front page) http://www.breastmilkproject.org/haiti.php IBMP posts this in a Q&A format: "Is International Breast Milk Project currently collecting any milk for Prolacta Bioscience? No." Naomi's update provides more information than I have seen publicly. The new executive director of IBMP is Amanda Nickerson, her bio is here: http://www.breastmilkproject.org/wwa_ourteam.php I note IBMP has a new board of directors: http://www.breastmilkproject.org/wwa_bod.php The old board can be found here, but it may not be there for long, this is just a Google cache. http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:Dl9S-VNxkmQJ:www.breastmilkproject.org/w wa_advisoryboard.php+david+rechtmann+prolacta+ibmp&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&client =safari Also of note, IBMP shipped breastmilk to help victims of the typhoon in the Philippines in October 2009. Their website indicates the milk was delivered to "the Philippines General Hospital Milk Bank in Manila, and then distributed with the help of UNICEF to the evacuation shelters throughout the Philippines." http://www.breastmilkproject.org/donation_drive_2.php I also note that some years ago when founder Jill Youse was first working on the project that became IBMP, it was reported that she looked at donating to an orphanage in Haiti run by a Florida man, Aaron Jackson, of Planting Peace. http://www.aegis.com/news/ap/2007/AP070331.html Jackson was profiled recently looking to raise money to buy water for the orphans in his facilities in Haiti. http://cfnews13.com/News/Local/2010/1/18/local_orphanage_creator_planting_pe ace_in_haiti.html I have lots to say about this but little time today. My very first thought when I heard about this was "for crying out loud, we can't even get clean *water* to people in Haiti..." And I also have thought for some years that it is unfortunate that IBMP entered into a partnership with Prolacta - I would have preferred a partnership with HMBANA. The for-profit involvement really muddied the waters. Now we are back to the slightly simpler debate about whether there is more harm than help in IBMP's efforts to ship breastmilk overseas. We can't change the fact that currently in North America breastfeeding women feel compelled to respond to international disasters by offering to donate breast milk. I note there is some history of recruiting human milk donations to help with extraordinary circumstances - there was a Canadian and American appeal for breastmilk donations for the Dionne quintuplets. I believe the IBMP experience has shown that women are easily be motivated to donate under certain circumstances. This motivation was successfully harnessed by Prolacta. Can this motivation be harnessed positively by HMBANA? -- Jodine Chase *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html To reach list owners: [log in to unmask] Mail all list management commands to: [log in to unmask] COMMANDS: 1.
