I have also been called many of the things posted here, most commonly by patients a lactating or lactition nurse. One I have not seen posted that I have only been called by one dad about 10 years ago was Hooter Helper, and I have never lived it down. In the early 90's when our lactation group was small, all 4 of us were small breasted and the staff (lovingly I hope), called us the Itty Bitty Titty Committee. It doesn't matter what we are called, but I do believe that it is a calling that brings us into the lactation field. For me as a NICU nurse I always saw the Bf preemies do better than their formula fed counterparts. My second son was my breastfeeding challenge, a tongue sucker who ravaged my nipples and took 2 weeks to figure it out. He then nursed happily for a year until he was too busy to interrupt his busy day for nursing. He gave me the desire to help other moms get through the rough beginnings so they can appreciate all the wonder and beauty breastfeeding offers when it finally goes right. I consider myself blessed. Grandmothers will watch me work with their grandchildren at their mothers breast and say "you have the best job", and most days I agree. Yet we all know that there are days when it seems the patients with problems outnumber us and we leave exhausted and overwhelmed. That is when I remind myself that this is my ministry, it is returning the gift, helping a mother provide her "liquid love" to her newborn miracle. And I know that I am positively impacting the mother and child's health for the rest of their lives. So call me whatever you like, it is an honor and a privilege just to be called. Blessings to all of you who share my passion, and who have ltought me so much over the years!
