Someone wondered about LCs working for non-Code compliant companies. If all IBCLCs quit their jobs who are working for non-CCC, there would be a lot of mothers that would not get help with breastfeeding. Hundreds of thousands of mothers. And a lot of IBCLCs that would be without a paycheck, supporting or helping to support their families. My peds practice is non-CCC. The hospital where I see moms & babies is non-CCC. So are the vast majority of the over 5000 hospitals in the US where babies are born. Should we be talking up how to be a CCC? Yes -- if that happens to be the battle we choose to wage. Sometimes we have to pick our battles, and sometimes the battle of the bag is not the one we choose to fight. Sometimes it is all we can do to get through a day seeing moms & babies. Would being in a CC hospital make breastfeeding easier for them? Maybe -- and maybe not. Because being CC doesn't stop the L&D interventions that often cause the problems to begin with.... Please understand I am not saying that code compliance is not important. It is. But that isn't the only issue out there...and suggesting that LCs shouldn't work for a non-CCC is probably not terribly useful. The important message in our Code of Ethics and SOP is how WE conduct OURSELVES with regard to marketing products. It doesn't say that we can't work for a non-CCC company. By the way, the ad that Rachel posted by Medela made me very, very sad. I appreciate there are times when mothers need to pump, and by doing so they keep their babies from having formula, but to suggest that breastfeeding is best ONLY for the baby, and pumping is best for BOTH mother and baby made the short hairs on the back of my neck stand up and quiver. I'm glad for good pumps. And sad that Medela thinks that they are improving things by taking away the classic and offering only the symphony. What they should have said was that by a mother choosing Medela products and pumping, it is best for Medela's bottom line. Wouldn't we have fun making our own ad for them???
