Wow. What about the women for whom this technique works? I have had the very
rarely occasional mom who has tried this (myself, included) and has tamped
down an oversupply as well as improved choking/gagging at the breast. Weight
gain, and future health of the baby, was not an issue.

Hate to sound obtuse, but if a baby can thrive on one breast, does it
matter, assuming comfort/safety for mother, which breast is used for the
babe? I suspect oversupply is an issue of "modern society" and scheduling
babies - is there an oversupply issue in the more primitive cultures around
the world? Of course, diet could play into those environs, as well, but I
suspect their diets are far from prime.

Is there a physiologic reason why cabbage leaves work on swelling?
Sometimes, things work for whatever reason, and excluding them from the "bag
of tricks" might prevent a mother from declaring success. I agree that
support and guidance is worthwhile, if for no other reasons than to
encourage the mother during a difficult time, and discourage the mother from
allowing one side to become engorged. But, ultimately, the person in charge
is the mother and if she feels she is fully informed, she will make the best
choice for herself.

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
