I received a request for help/information from a former client of mine. She had her baby at 30 weeks, weighing 3 lbs 10 oz. Baby is now 4 weeks + 4 days old and had been doing very well. Here is the email I got from her today: *Just got a call from NICU that [baby] had a bloody stool. They did an Xray and it was inconclusive but they suspect NEC. They said they need to treat as if it is NEC with antibiotics and no food for 48hours and more Xrays. If subsequent Xrays lead them to believe it is NEC they d/c food for 1 week. (IV nutrition only). * *I think it could be a cows milk protein allergy instead. [My first baby] had issues with cows milk as a baby and I had to give up dairy for 4mos while nursing. They have also been fortifying my breast milk with human milk fortifier which has cows milk protein in it. I am heading up to the hospital and won't have time to research the difference in symptoms between NEC and an allergy to dairy. Or tests you can do to determine the difference. Can someone start researching things that I may want to bring up to them or things I may want to look into further or any information that will help me. I am so worried about starving my daughter. I am also worried if it is NEC since it is very serious. I am also worried about her never learning to breast feed. We have been learning to breast feed and now that will have to stop until this is resolved (is there a window of learning opportunity that will be lost if we don't nurse for 2 weeks??) If it is an allergy they would take her off breast milk for 2 weeks and give her something else (not sure what?) while I d/c dairy in my diet. I am devastated either way - I don't know what to do. Any help or* *information is appreciated. * ** I usually don't post...just "lurk" to read and learn. Any and all suggestions welcome!
