Our DHS has a Death Investigation Checklist and a committee of HCPs and other citizens who review that checklist in light of any autopsy done by the Medical Examiner, to help determine cause & manner of death. I found Arizona's by searching the Az Revised Statutes and the AzDHS web site. Try doing the same for your state. As for collecting statistics - speculation here - maybe the committee reports data to AAP? No proof - just my personal guess. And there are questions that I would change on our checklist if I were Emperor. BTW: my sister, the retired police detective, has put in time on that committee herself.
