New York City does have a very active and very guilt-inducing stop smoking
campaign.

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to ad my 4 cents:
The local ad with the woman who had 20 amputations for circulatory problems
associated with smoking is particularly striking. Oddly, I don't see this ad
as guilt-inducing, I see it as prophetic, truth-telling in the best way. It
pulls no punches and yells at no one, just tells the truth for this woman and
what is left of her hands. same for the one where the gentleman talks about
how he lost his voice, and a good bit of breathing capability. The fact is it
could be more graphic and show what might be left of her lower extremities,
if anything, but does not. My husband and I were shocked, in a good way, to
see this ad, since as a PT and him as a prosthetist, we know plenty of people
like this brave woman who is telling her story. The other thing I thought of
is this: most campaigns around condom use no longer refer to "safe sex" but
instead to "safer sex." Perhaps this would work with Safer Sleeping as a slogan.

Peace,
Judy
