Hello Lactnetters, In November 2005, a small group of us, mainly from this site, started a "Kangaroo Mother Care" Yahoo support and information site: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Kangaroo-Mother-Care/ For those who may have joined Lactnet in the interim, and not know about us, I would like to share here if I may, and tell everyone they are welcome to join us. The group is thriving, and we now have members all around the world, doing what they can to get KMC into their hospitals. Kangaroo Mother Care is a bit different to just Kangaroo Care. As KMC pioneer, Nils Bergman, says -- in KMC, M is for mother and M is for milk and newborns should never be separated from their mothers unless it is absolutely necessary. KMC seeks to place all healthy newborns, full term or premature, skin- to-skin on their mother's chest from birth on, with unrestricted access to the breast. These babies are kept skin-to-skin with the mother 24 hours a day (with the dad or another caring person taking over if the mother needs a break -- e.g. to take a bath). This means that all the babies' needs for warmth, nutrition and love, are met from the beginning, and is the optimal way to create physically and emotionally healthy human beings. Thank you to Lactnet for helping us get that group established by announcing it here, and Lactnetters are always welcome to join us. Warm wishes, Pat Torngren (Cape Town, South Africa) *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html To reach list owners: [log in to unmask] Mail all list management commands to: [log in to unmask] COMMANDS: 1.
