Hi Kathleen! Thanks for your response. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I got a lot of responses. I am going to compile them and take them when I meet with my director the first of May. The recovery nurse cares for both after mom and baby move from the OR to the recovery room. Babies are put skin2skin or to breast in recovery. Sometimes I'm called to help with the first breastfeeding...depends on the nurse... :-) But often I'm not there and the recovery nurse gets breastfeeding going and then updates me on how feeding went. If mom is not holding the baby or breastfeeding in recovery, dad or support person holds the baby in the recovery room. We don't separate moms and babies after c-sections unless there's an emergent situation. If they don't breastfeed in recovery, I'm alerted and then I go in to help when mom is settled in her postpartum room....unfortunately, baby is often totally zoned at that point and can't be roused to feed. <sigh> It's hard. C-section moms feel so crappy after surgery and it's hard to want to breastfeed when you're groggy, nauseated and in pain. Our recovery nurses are awesome though, they rreally try hard to get babies latched on in recovery.
