Thank you, one and all, for the suggestions and encouragement. The *father* called tonight to thank me (and my network!) He had specifically prayed for guidance and expectations. When I called the mom, this morning, we talked more about expectations, and how she was getting along. She took frequent naps yesterday, and a few warm baths. Pumped, and pumped. The breast soreness is gone, and she attributed it to an early case of mastitis. We spoke about www.asklenore.info and she admits to living there, and finding so much information and support. (She was amazed that Lenore her self actually contacted me!!!) She now feels encouraged and empowered that what was yesterday, "only 1/2 ounce" is today "1/2 OUNCE!!!" She has a court date for her adoption, and will hopefully receive her precious baby in 6-8 weeks. While she was frustrated at starting pumping "too early" we talked about how her son is waiting in another country, and is working hard to come here, too, and certainly he shares her frustration. We all felt better, today. Thank you all, again. You make a difference, one baby at a time. Best wishes, Sam Doak << Sounds like she is making great progress. Sore nipples with pumping when one has not been pregnant is typical. The hormones that make everything stretchier are just not there, but do kick in as milk production increases. I usually recommend starting with one minute pumping sessions, very frequently through the day for moms inducing lactation, and then working up very gradually to prevent sore nipples. Hand expression is very effective too! Also, remember what the PIS is designed/manufactured for: moms with an established supply who are going to be separated from their baby for up to 3 feedings a day. Mom might be much better off with a rental pump.
