Hi Jennifer, I read this post of yours with interest, as I believe it’s very important that new mothers are given accurate information in child birth classes. When I took my class, I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful instructor who turned to me when questions of breastfeeding came up (and I was only a CLC then!!) If other NICU type questions came up, she turned to a fellow classmate who was a NICU RN. She was such a wonderful instructor that I was beside myself with joy when she walked into my hospital room the day after I had my c-section and told me she was my nurse for the day! I have a few suggestions for your situation- 1- If you know the hospital LC and have a good relationship with her, you can inform her of the misinformation being given. She might have a relationship with the instructor and may know of a better way to correct the misinformation. She might also want to know that what she is teaching and what the other woman is teaching is conflicting. 2- Speak to the instructor privately. I think the important thing is that you give her the correct information and ask that she promote infant feeding based on what is the norm, meaning breastfeeding. Remind her that she has an obligation to all the new babies to ask mothers to provide what is best, and to promote that fully. Point out that she could potentially be setting these moms up for failure by telling them their babies should only eat 6-8 times a day, - use all the reasons you listed in your post. This is certainly a tough situation, since you don’t want to offend her or make her feel like she doesn’t know what she is talking about. But I do think she needs correcting. You could even present her with some solid studies showing how often new babies need to be fed. Good luck!
