Tawn, I am sorry to hear about your sister having to go through this. I wish the best for her as she gets through this. As you know, donor human milk, will be the best option, if it is available to you. The first thing I would do would be to go online and find the nearest milk bank. HMBANA is the association over the banks. You can google that. If there is a way to get that, with dr's prescription, find out if ya'll can afford it. If not, or if you might also have to use some formula, then I would use a true elemental formula, and I beleive Neocate and Pregestimil are two. I would google this or check the archives to confirm this. My understanding is that Nutramigen and Alimentum are hypoallergenic but not totally broken down into amino acids. When she knows a bit more about her treatment and how much/how often substitute milk will be needed, she can judge better how much she will need, based on her freezer supply. She might consider adding some of her milk to the formula for each feeding, to make it more palatable and to give some good mommy milk benefits at each feeding. My 4 month old (many years ago) was able to take from a cup the few feeds I was away each week, not sure if that is feasible if there will be several days or more of having to alternate feed. As far as bottles, there is some good info about paced bottle feeding and bottlefeeding like a breastfeeder in our archives or in the JHL journal. The nipples I usually recommend are Playtex Ventaire and DR. Browns (the larger drop in size bottles), Playtex Natural Latch, and Gerber comfort latch. The main thing I look for is the tapered shape, the slow flow, the soft material, and how the feeding is given. Hope this helps you some.
