Hi All I have permission to postJ I have had a call from a mum who's baby is now 14 weeks old, and has been diagnosed with silent reflux 8 days ago. The medication is Losec 10mg twice day. This baby has always been a reluctant feeder, His growth rate is on the 75 percentile. Baby only takes approx 800 mls over 24 hrs which means he only has 4 feeds a day. This baby sleeps from 6-30 pm until 7 in the morning. Mum is formula feeding. To-day the baby's took 200 mls at 0730 feed, 120 mls at 1130, is now 5 hours since the last feed and still not interested in feeding. The baby isn't distressed, lethargic, or sleepy Mum mention it can take up to 45 minutes before the baby starts to feed from the bottle. I explained to Mum that it was beyond my experience and to contact the pediatrician if the baby continues not to feed. My thoughts were the medication wasn't working well, maybe the baby associates feeding with pain. Maybe the baby isn't hungry. I would appreciate any thoughts that you can share. As I am really out of my depth , how little can a baby survive on and remain well? The other idea I did have was this mother was so stressed in her pregnancy and I am wondering if this might be a factor with this baby. This is her second child.
