Just in case it wasn't really freezing that caused the change in odor, I wanted to add my two cents. Two moms I've helped with particular problems with frozen milk smelling rancid turned out to be basic housekeeping than biology. One mom wasn't cleaning her pump parts thoroughly enough so that even freshly pumped milk had an off smell. Once she properly took apart the pump parts and washed them thoroughly, the problem went away. Another mom with particularly soapy smelling milk turned out to be putting dish soap directly on her pump parts, which made it very difficult to completely rinse. I suggested she mix some warm, soapy water and put the parts into the soapy water, rather than trying to save time by putting the soap directly onto the pump parts. The molecular make-up of plastic makes soap tend to stick easier.
