In our case, it started with pretty severe oral thrush combined with a typical yeasty diaper dermatitis... and mom was being treated for a vaginal yeast infection (topically).... THEN she started with the severe sharp burning breast/nipple pain at/after feeds. She had bright red nipples, and it all fit like classic yeast. We did nystatin first(mom/baby), then gentian violet(mom/baby) x 5-6 days, then added fluconazole(mom/baby x 4 weeks, dad x -- don't remember - one round) , added cephalexin(mom) after the second week of fluconazole. we were doing gentian violet again at the same time we did the fluconazole. Moms nipples look better. Thrush is resolved in baby's mouth, diaper rash is resolved. Vaginal yeast is resolved. Pain is continuing, although greatly improved. It took 4 weeks to get this improvement. Right now the continuing pain is our issue. Mom has really struggled with this, and I am actually amazed she is continuing to breastfeed. I hope this story all makes sense. what next?
