Hi All, Thanks everyone for your wonderful ideas and theories as to why this primip mom and 1 month old baby found themselves in this situation. To date we have a baby who is now at birth weight once again and gained about 3/4 pound in the 3 days in the hospital. Many testes were done and a neurologist says the baby is fine and this is a person I generally trust with his knowledge base. Interestingly enough the head sonogram did show some evidence of a cyst or old "bleed" and this baby was another yet another vacuum assisted delivery. CT was not classified as abnormal. This mom still notes that the baby does not waken for feeds and is still concerned about this excessive sleepiness which she said was not typical the first 2 weeks of life. She has re-lactated well and as of this date she is about 1 ounce shy of what baby needs per feeding based on calculations. The baby is tolerating alimentum extremely well with no regurging or reflux symptoms. She is taking a scale home to assess ac/pc weights, at least 2 x daily and is continuing to pump. I am usually the last person to recommend this approach (scale rental), but this mom is scared this baby will lose weight again if just breastfeeding and hopefully this will allow her to gain confidence as baby continues to gain and transfer milk better. The baby is being cared for by a family practice physician. I hope they continue to observe very closely for developmental milestones and refer to early Intervention programs if required. Anyone think this is totally off base? Rachel's post on starvation and appetite we quite helpful and I hope that the appetite switch is turned on soon. If not, I'm afraid this mom is in for quite a struggle. Personally I am still quite concerned re: the neurological status of this baby. Mom feels his tone is way too relaxed. I, did not see this baby today, just talked to mom via phone. Thanks everyone, LuAnn Smith RN, BSN,IBCLC _________________________________________________________________ http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HM_mini_2G_0507 *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html Mail all commands to [log in to unmask] To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or [log in to unmask]) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet or ([log in to unmask]) To reach list owners: [log in to unmask]
