Hi All, I just got off the phone with a mom (who is also a new LLL) who is giving her 10 wk old ½ tsp of Maalox 4 times per day for possible reflux. Baby was crying a lot – they did not do any studies or testing for reflux – said it was just colic but here let’s try Maalox. Dr refused to give Prevacid saying that it is no longer OK to use in babies less than 1 yr. She refused to prescribe Zantac stating that it is used to prevent stomach acid from being created and said the Maalox is used to soothe the acids already in the stomach. So far the Maalox appears to be helping – but it could also be coincidence and that she is feeding more often and paying more attention to the baby’s needs (they just moved from Texas and have been very stressed with a 2 yr old, newborn and long move in to an unfamiliar area). Baby had apparently been a very sporadic nurser – one day eating frequently and well and next day sleeping all day and nursing only a 5 times or so. It is a complicated story and I got bits and pieces from her – sort of a jumble. She called me looking for a scale. There may also be some slow weight gain issues – baby has an avg weight gain of 1.2 oz/day. Baby is stooling about every 6 days and Dr says that is not nearly enough and wants to see baby stooling more than that. Dr is also concerned about weight gain and wants her to pump and bot feed to see how much fatty milk there is. Mom wanted to simply do pre/post weighs and Dr said no – that wouldn’t measure the quality of the milk – she isn’t worried about the quantity of the milk – just the quality. When mom asked if she wanted to see how much hind milk the baby was getting the Dr said No – the fatty milk that makes the baby gain weight is what she wanted to check. Sigh… So – questions are what is it with the Maalox? I have never heard of that. Also the Prevacid and Zantac stuff - ??? Did I miss something somewhere on this apparently new information? Re: the Dr – no comment. Mom asked for referrals to other better Peds – I gave them. (mom is brand new to the area – here only 2 weeks) All input is welcome… Thanks in advance… Jaye PS – I did tell her I’d love to do a full-on consult with her – sit down and really look at baby, feeding abilities, etc…sounds like an interesting case…we’ll see. Until then, I want to know if this ‘treatment’ is viable and safe… *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html Mail all commands to [log in to unmask] To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or [log in to unmask]) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet or ([log in to unmask]) To reach list owners: [log in to unmask]
