> > >The red flag for me, is the comment about "No mother has needed >antibiotics". I think that's a shocking thing to say to any mother, >and firmly places the 'fault' at having an infection at the mother's >door. It also makes me wonder how many other women got this bad and >gave up. Morgan, I agree it's shocking.....but honestly, they may not have said it! Twice in my life as a bfc I have heard from somehere else what I am supposed to have said, which I didn't. Complaints were made. In one case, it was a sheer misunderstanding/mishearing/misremembering on the part of the mother - fortunately, I had notes which recorded what I had said. The second case was pure mistaken identity - someone else, not me, and not even a breastfeeding counsellor, had told a mother something crazy. It got relayed to the health visitor as 'NCT said...' and she had the brazen cheek to assume it was me and wrote letters about it. In both cases, I was very upset not to have had a chance to hear the 'charge' against me before the complaint was made. In my role with NCT, I have also dealt with distressed mothers who have told me what someone else in NCT has said, or what has happened in a class, and it has turned out to be simply not true. Upset, ill and angry mothers get things wrong. In one case, a mother was mentally ill and had a real problem with confabulating (making things up for attention). I know mothers get told the wrong things, and I have heard them myself. But we have to be fair - natural justice and a spirit of collegial support demands it. I thought Rachel's suggested response - the letter one, not the 2am phone call one! - was just right. (Also - Jaye is in the US, where I suspect they don't have heads of midwifery or midwifery units like we do!)
