I am the queen of pumping as 95% of what I do is loan electric pumps to our WIC moms. The frothy thing is how colostrum comes out of the valves. Happens with the Medela and Ameda pumps. Why? Who knows but once the milk becomes "mature milk" it stops being so frothy or bubbly. I have seen it drop down from the valves as bubbles. Usually this happens before day 6 or so. As an IBCLC, being just a pump instructor is very frustrating to me but I have such knowledge now that I never had before.... Our breastfeeding rate for women loaned these pumps for their NICU infants is about zero. I may have 1 in 15 or 20 do some bf after discharge. Most try once or twice in the hospital and refuse IBCLC help or PC help once home and then quit pumping as they are "too busy."
