Pam - There is one line in your post that jumped out at me: Mom never experienced fullness, or engorgement.. It is my understanding that this raises a red flag for many. However, I have read that if an infant breastfeeds AT BIRTH, and frequently and as long as the baby desires in the first few days, the mom will not experience that engorgement on day 2, 3, 4, etc, that we are so used to seeing. Can that be studied? Not in our society as most infants do not follow that pattern; perhaps in some Third World countries where the infants may BF dozens of times per day (per Margaret Mead, anthropologist) and for as long as they want. Here, we do not see the biological norm, not even in most home births. Our books, logs, pamphlets, etc tell moms that 6 feedings per day is normal up to and through day 2, and 8-12 feedings per day from then on. Moms have asked me why nobody tells them the truth; that it is much more than that. Dare we tell them it is because most women in our culture would be very upset or should we start telling the truth? :-) Warm regards, Lee Lee Galasso, MS, LLLL, IBCLC, RLC Lactation Specialist Lactation Center of Westchester/Putnam Westchester County in NYS, USA 914-245-2206 [log in to unmask] Vice-President Westchester/Putnam/Rockland (WPR) Lactation Consortium *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html Mail all commands to [log in to unmask] To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or [log in to unmask]) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet or ([log in to unmask]) To reach list owners: [log in to unmask]
