Kristen asked for ideas of what doctors should avoid saying. I have one: - Sore nipples are normal in the first days, and they need rest to heal. Mom should sleep through the night and have someone bottle feed the baby for a few days, so she can rest and the nipples can heal! -----Original Message----- From: Lactation Information and Discussion [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Kirsten Berggren Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 12:01 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [LACTNET] What not to say? Hi all! The standard "what to tell physicians when I have a chance to educate them" with a twist: I've been asked to speak to our family medicine residents for 1 hour, and the (wise) resident organizing this asked me to discuss "what not to do and say" - i.e. things physicians say that discourage breastfeeding, whether inadvertantly or not, though preferably the inadvertant ones. In a post from today, I've gleaned these ideas: -scheduling is necessary -supplementing is necessary -baby should be sleeping through the night -cosleeping is dangerous What are your other favorites in this category?? (What a great opportunity! - maybe a short educational booklet of "common things we tell mothers that can harm breastfeeding outcomes" could be put together out of this! one of my next tasks is the "provider resources" page of our breastfeeding web area w/in the dept of health...)
