Hi, All: I've been following the Down Syndrome thread with interest. A dear friend of mine was pregnant with her 4th (and last) baby at the same time I was pregnant with my 3rd (and last) baby. My daughter was born perfect in every way. Her son was born with Down Syndrome. She was an experienced nurser - all her babies were nursed 2-3 years. Her son nursed 14 months beautifully after overcoming some muscle tone issues in the early weeks. He is high-functioning and was fortunate not to have any of the other common issues. My friend says the most valuable help that she received during those 1st couple of years was support from the wonderful families who comprise the National Association of Down Syndrome (NADS). They hooked her family up with a family who had gone thru the same emotional issues as her family was facing. She says the help and support were phenomenal! For those of you outside the USA, find out if a similar organization exists in your area. One of the 1st things I do when I work with a family with Down is to refer them to NADS, then we work on breastfeeding.
