How timely your query! I went to Linda Smith's presentation on teaching-games. The topic of Vit K came up. You can find it in colostrum in sufficient quantities. Her research showed that Vit K shots began in the era when we, in the US, were withholding colostrum from babies - as in 24 hours NPO or only sugar water during that time. What time frame was that? I know my mother was "permitted" to put me to breast for 5 min on Day 3 (1943). Apparently when colostrum feeds were again "permitted", no one thought to review the Vit K policy.
