I adapted the competencies I've used in the past and use currently from the AWHONN standards. "Back in the day" I did create some from scratch. Basically nurses, care partners, nurse's aides, and anyone else who helps new mothers should be able to help with latch, postioning, feeding frequency and duration, signs of intake and output, and provide some anticipatory guidance and what to expect in the next few days. We also had a competency on when to use a breast pump and which one to choose. Sore nipples and engorgement, the use of breast shells and lanolin were also addressed. Hope this helps.
