Hi Robbie, I am working with a mother right now (permission granted) who had breast reduction surgery 10 years ago, after the birth of her first child. She did not plan a second pregnancy, and was pleasantly surprised to have a second child a few months ago. From what I understand, the literature says a "keyhole" procedure (nipple removed, underneath breast tissue reduced, nipple reattached) she should have no milk production. Her incision is exactly at 4:00 and 8:00, primary nerves for lactation. She, however, is pumping quite a bit more than her baby is taking right now. Her problem lies that first, the baby was roughed up during his delivery (cesarean, pulled hard on the head and nerves in his neck impinged). He cannot open his mouth up all the way, which is not helping the latch. Second, after surgery, she was left with quite a bit of scar tissue and has large, fibrous nipples. The large nipples, combined with the baby's small mouth opening, is a difficult combination. I'm thinking Jan's post about the Fr feeding tube is what we're going to try tonight! Best wishes, Heather "Sam" Doak <<My questions to you are: What are your experiences with mothers who have had breast surgery? What was their success rate of breastfeeding ? Did they need to supplement due to inadequate milk supply? Also, has anyone had breastfeeding problems with patients who have had other thoracic surgeries involving breast tissue (such as cardiac surgery)? Any information or stories you could share would be appreciated. Thank you, Robbi, Student Nurse>> *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
