Dear Tiffany, My first experience with a twins mom was counseling a neighbor several years ago. She had breastfed her first child, so we did not have as much of a learning curve as if this were her first, but here are some helpful things we have passed on to other moms of multiples over the years. (She is also a certified peer breastfeeding counselor). 1. Milk supply is produced according to demand. If babies regulate the demand, mother can make the supply. Where did you read that mother doesn't have enough milk at first? 2. As with singleton moms, the more rules and schedules you place on breastfeeding, the less enjoyable it is for the mom. Were you perhaps referring to how mother could record babies' output when you mentioned scheduling? Keep in mind that if you tell every twin mom she "must" pump, she will spend 23 1/2 hours a day doing something with her breasts! 3. One should not limit an infant's time on the breast. Let the baby decide when to end the feeding. 4. You can aid a mother by showing her helpers how to bring babies to mom for feeding and helping her to position them. There are websites and books available from LLL depicting various ways to position and nurse twins simultaneously. For mothers who are alone, brainstorm places where she can nurse where both babies are accessible to her reach. She can latch one on and then position the other. 5. It is not a "must" that a mother nurse her twins simultaneously. If mom can only cope with nursing one at a time, she can do that. It can be overwhelming for a new mother to learn breastfeeding, and with twins a mothers self-confidence is even lower because many will question her ability to make enough milk for two babies. My friend's husband quieted naysayers with this bit of wisdom, "Two boobies, two babies, I don't see a shortage at all." If you would like more twin-based counseling tips you can email me off list. Hope these help you to project confidence next time you have a twins mom. *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
