Most preterm babies are on Reglan to increase GI motility, not H-2 blockers. They are usually only used for infants with GI bleeding or a high risk of GI bleeding (eg. on Indocin or steroids, severe stress in bigger babies, etc.). We have known for a very long time that stomach acidity (which is very limited in preterm infants anyway) is a part of the body's natural defense system to pathogenic bacteria. Not sure why they are making such a big deal of this study - old news. Nancy E.
