I just wanted to clear up some misinformation in this post - the writer states: "It is ironic that WIC supports breastfeeding this way, seeing as it is almost entirely financially supported by formula companies and if we actually had all WIC moms breastfeeding we wouldn't have funds to even have a WIC program." This is not true - the funding for WIC is federal money, the same pot of money that funds food stamps and school lunch. WIC does receive formula at a deeply reduced price (they are rebated from the formula company that wins the contract), but does not take any money from formula companies. Actually, WIC is more breastfeeding friendly than many American hospitals in that regard - they don't allow advertising of formula, don't accept gifts from formula companies, etc. If all WIC moms were to breastfeed, there would actually be more money to serve more woman and children, because the formula package is much more expensive than the food package Melinda Johnson, MS RD Phoenix, AZ From: Alia Heise <[log in to unmask]> Reply-To: Lactation Information and Discussion *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
