Veronica Good question about what to teach in the hospital setting regarding bedsharing. Unfortunately, I believe you should be very careful and not come right out and recommend bedsharing (which I do believe in and did practice) because it would likely cause great problems for you. I would feel comfortable stating that the bedsharing issue is far from resolved and that there is very good research and recommendations by McKenna, for example. If you do discuss this subject, do discuss safe bedsharing environments. Especially if you teach a class, this can be discussed. I often use an example about discipline. Some "experts" believe in corporal punishment. Others feel there is never a place for it. Or you could use an example about starting complementary foods. Some "experts" prescribe rigid feeding amounts and schedules and others encourage a more relaxed approach w/ table foods. I encourage parents to not just accept one "rule" but to read and think and consider alot more and make the best decisons they can. Laurie Wheeler, IBCLC, MN, RN Tupelo Mississippi, s.e.
