Yesterday, on my way to work, I was listening to GMA. A sweet young thing was explaining what you need to have on hand to prepare for disasters. Of course she mentioned formula because mom's milk will dry up from stress. Just thought you'd all like to know that. I was so mad I couldn't see straight - dangerous when you are driving! Of course, my comments went to GMA as soon as I got to a computer! Pat in SNJ I sent it to [log in to unmask] This morning on Good Morning America I heard a totally inaccurate and misleading statement! The reorter stated that people need infant formula in their basic supplies because breastfeeding mothers dry up because of stress and will need formula to feed their babies. First of all, breastfeeding is the preferred way to feed babies. 2nd WHO< UNICEF and the American Academy of Pediatrics all agree that breastfeeding is the preferred way to feed babies in extenuating circumstances, like a natural disaster. 3rd Mothers of newborns in hurricane paths need to be encouraged and given the tools to sucessfully breastfeed. A bottle of formula is on the path to failure of breastfeeding. I hope you contact real experts like Dr. Lawrence Gartner or Dr Nancy Wight or WHO and get together a better presentation on what a newborn and his/her mother needs in the face of a disaster. *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
