I recently discovered a link to some on-line breastfeeding videos, and one in particular was AMAZING to me, as I'd only known about the Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) before, but this looks sooo much simpler, yet works on the same principle. Great for increasing moms milk supply while baby breastfeeds - all the while "Feeding the Baby". Click on: http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/newman.shtml and look for the first video, stating: "Lactation Aid - Shows how to use lactation aid. Note that when it is working, the baby shows he is getting more milk because the pause in the chin is more obvious. In the second attempt to use the lactation aid, though the tube seems to be well placed, it is not. The baby was not getting more milk, as there were no pauses in the chin. Fiddling with the tube gets the baby drinking again. The lactation aid does not work well if the baby is poorly latched on and/or the tube is poorly placed, but it can be made to work well with practice." PS: I usually teach moms that each time they hear the baby swallow "uh. uh." - that's when they know milk is being taken in. (This sound follows after what Dr. Newman describes in this video as the 'pause in the chin'.) So many mothers don't know how to tell what a good feed is, and I find that teaching them to listen for the actual swallowing sound helps - they get to know what 'sounded' like a good feed and what didn't. (Although - before the milk comes in, when there's only Colostrum, it's not that easy to hear the swallows, but baby only needs about a teaspoon per feed of this Colostrum, so she's not to worry if all is going well.) Hope you find the video-clip helpful!
