Gonneke, Concerning: snip< "in a discussion of the function of nipple muscles... that muscles could be trained to keep the nipple pores closed and stop leaking. Nowhere in lactation literature nor via medline nor in the lactnet archives can I find this theory. Can someone enlighten me?"> This is anecdotal, but my little sister years ago successfully breastfed 4 children. And was a full-time working mother, working 12 hour shifts as a factory worker on an assembly line. She always was a plentiful milk maker and had let-down/leakage issues on her long shifts without access to pumping. She adamantly reports that with disciplined purpose, she trained her breasts to stop leaking by just a key thought. Much like how most mothers just put a brief gentle pressure over the nipple to stop leaking. She would do that, plus consistently think a key phrase each time. And after a while all she had to do was think the key phase without any nipple pressure, and leaking was then a manageable problem. This was extremely handy for her as her hands and arms were busy with the moving conveyor belt and not free to use at the breast. I always wondered if it worked along the same lines as the old experiment with Pavlov's dogs. She convinced me to try it with my first baby, and I never had success with the training. But I was NOT consistent or deliberate with the effort, and she WAS. Don't know that that helps you, but that's her 2 cents on the subject... Rachel A.
