Andrea: Our perinatal education co-ordinator (RN,IBCLC) calls all our moms within a week of hospital d/c. We do about 175 deliveries/month. She uses a standard form, but it is basically open-ended, along the lines of how have you/baby been doing since you've been home?. She asks 3 questions: How are you doing? Are you having any problems? Is there anything I can do for you? There is a space at the bottom for her comments about the phone call. She will flag and pass on any call sheets in which there was any patient dissatisfaction or specific issues to the appropriate manager. She will refer more complex brstfdg questions/problems that may require more phone time or a possible office visit to me, but usually takes care of routine brstfdg concerns herself. She reaches many answering machines and leaves a message inviting the mom to call back. She does not attempt again, unless she knows that this mom had issues while in the hospital. Otherwise, she relies on the mom to contact us if she does have concerns. Moms are pleased that someone took the time to ask how they are doing, so it's a good PR move for the hospital. It also gives our co-ordinator a chance to tell the mom about PP classes/services we offer thru the hospital.
