On Thursday, May 6, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney held a press conference to announce the re-filing of her Breastfeeding Promotion Bill. It is the same as the previous bill and will be filed next week. The bill is aimed to protect women under civil rights laws from being discriminated against or being fired for expressing milk during their own lunch or break time. It would require the provision of full information regarding safety of breast pumps, and will give tax credits to employers who create a mother-friendly workplace for women to express milk in a safe, sanitary, and private location. Dr. Audrey Naylor represented the US Breastfeeding Committee at the press conference saying a few words about the importance of the bill as well as distributing the USBC press release and media kits. Congresswoman Maloney will also soon have available three papers of interest to the breastfeeding community: one will be an update on state breastfeeding laws, the second will look at federal laws and bills, and the third is planned to look at exemption from federal jury duty service. Those interested in moving the bill forward can ask their Congressional representatives to sign onto the bill once it receives a bill number. Anyone belonging to an organization can ask that a letter of endorsement of the bill be sent to demonstrate a wide base of support for such legislation.
