The Vit D theory is interesting but this problem has been around longer than the push for those drops in early infancy. What I think is more significant in Valerie's post is how long it takes the gut to heal once an insult has resulted. My theory is that most of these babies received a bottle in the hospital, either knowingly by the parents or the night nurse just helping out. (I am being sarcastic!) There has been articles on the newborn's gut sensitized to the bovine protein through one bottle and then the problem escalates with the mother's diet while breastfeeding. This is why the hydrolyzed formulas work while the gut is healing. An elimination diet can also work. I have a question to the pediatric clinicians on the list. How often do you see bloody stools in formula feed babies? Americans definitely eat a high percentage of milk products. The dairy industry is very big and powerful in the USA.
