Hi Jaye et al, I have worked as a hospital based LC for 4.5 years, and I LOVE it! This job came after 10 years at an out-of-hospital birthing center. I just relish the chance to be right in the mainstream, helping change practice, nudging co-workers to change their perspective through modeling it to them, and influencing moms and dads to see their newborns as fully intelligent and sensitive human beings. It's a GREAT job! I have tremendous respect and admiration for those of you out there who can deal with that environment. In regards to this situation tho I personally feel that the issue is not that everyone gives D5 and "we had to do something". The issue is as the original poster said - the choice was taken away from the mother - that is unacceptable. Using the excuse that the mother has limited English skills is absurd and negligent (in my personal opinion) and 1/2 ounce of anything that early is too much. That baby needed his mother asap and she needed to be aware immediately that her baby was in distress. It appears to me that the mother and the baby are being blown off with excuses rather than having their needs, rights and feelings validated and respected in the professional manner that I am sure they were expecting. I don't think the original poster is making a big deal out of this - She is the one with the right attitude and I hope that the mother has the information to file a formal complaint. The staff who are blowing the whole thing off are the ones with the problem. What if it were their baby and their right to be aware of what was happening to their child was taken away and something the expressly did NOT want to happen happened because the staff attending treated them as if they did not exist? They would be furious, and rightfully so. Since I am NOT a hosp based LC and know nothing of the hoops that must be jumped through to handle such a situation I cannot give any suggestions as to what the original poster could do to change this for the future. However, as a private practice LC, if one of my mommies told me this story (and I have heard similar) I would tell her to write a letter, get names, and file a formal complaint NOW. Warmly, (and sad for mommy and baby and LC) Jaye Simpson, IBCLC *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
