>I don't believe the WIC program will succeed at increasing BF rates to a >high level until the amount of formula is reduced or (gasp) eliminated. I've taken my WIC program from 14% bfing to 42% bfing over the 7 yrs I've been there. The WIC population has increased bfing rates faster than the overall population. Granted it had lower rates to start but surely someone has to recognize WIC has made tremendous gains in this population that so badly needs the education and support. I'm very proud of my WIC position and yes I "give out" formula too when requested and or needed but not until they know what the difference is..that it is not the same as breastmilk and no where near as good for their baby. Sadly that does not impress some and they still make the decision to use formula but we live in America and it is THEIR choice to make (even at the expense of their baby)...at least they make it with full knowledge of what the risks are where I work. I see my job as an educator not an enforcer. I'm able to make great differences in many lives albeit not all.
