Kathy writes: <<I don't see with all our breastfeeding education that WIC women are really buying into the message that breast is best. I think moms also rationalize that if WIC really thought breast was best, they wouldn't give out formula. And many women feel cheated if they don't get all they can get from the program (food and formula).>> WIC is certainly making great strides yet this is exactly what I hear from women who are in the program. This thinking may drive the "supplementing." <<I don't believe the WIC program will succeed at increasing BF rates to a high level until the amount of formula is reduced or (gasp) eliminated. I don't believe it will ever reduce or eliminate formula because of the formula manufacturers strong lobbying.>> I always think of a certain teen mom I worked with who exuberantly and exclusively bf her fat healthy baby until "finally" her papers went through for abm. Dropped the breast the day she picked up the sub. But I have to believe we will someday have US legislation to curtail the marketing in line with the WHO Code. I can't help but think the big issue is the PR bf or its subs receives. Thanks, Kathy, for your in-the-trenches comments.
