Greetings all, I'm returning to Lactnet after an absence caused by excessive busyness. I am a hospital-based LC living in Iowa. I have been an LC for nearly nine years and was an LLL Leader for 10 years. In response to the Military Mom's concern shared by Dr. Jay: I've found that hand expression of colostrum in the best method of getting a decent volume for baby in the first day or two of life. I'd suggest that this Mom learn this technique correctly then hand express a minimum of 20 drops every two hours (if the baby won't nurse or the sugar is low). We use a med cup to collect the drops and then have one of the parents drop it into the baby's mouth slowly. In my practice, I've seen the blood sugar go up 20 points with 20 large drops of colostrum. If the Mom can get more, I tell her "more is better". (PS Sometimes the father does a better job of expressing colostrum.)
