More than likely he aquired it through the feco-oral route. Did he take
baths with his mum? Transmission through breast milk would be very
unlikely. Did the mother have any symptoms?

I hope the munchkin starts gaining weight once he is treated. I think other
members of the family should also be tested to rule out asymptomatic
carriage.
