I know this has been addressed with regard to infants, but my search in the archives has been unsuccessful and I have a mom of a nursing two-year- old asking me. Her son, who is developmentally on target, very low in the weight centile, more "acceptable" (I know, I know) in the height centile, very allergic (dairy, soy) and has been a crummy eater for at least a year, nursing often, has had various blood tests done due to doctors' insistence. His hematocrit was low and mom is asking if taking maternal iron supplements, or offering the little boy supplements, would negatively impact his absorption of iron in breastmilk. In other words, is it a good idea to supplement with iron (either via mom or directly), or a waste of time and a better idea to just wait until he becomes a less picky eater? She is obviously getting pressure to nurse less and offer more table food, but feels he would not necessarily eat more by nursing less and is rather relieved (wise mama!) that he is at least getting quality nourishment in his mama milk. Thanks for any input! Happy Holidays to all who are celebrating at this season.
