From what I understand, breastmilk is generally OK. It robs mom's body of everything it needs to make adequate milk. Tweaking the diet or upping consumption of one food, element or another doesn't really affect the composition of the milk. (ie: increasing fat in diet doesn't make mom's milk richer, etc). What various sorts of nutrition does is make sure mom's personal supplies are not depleted. If mom's supplies are depleted then mom had nutritional problems, but until mom is practically starving to death, milk composition remains the same. Severe restriction of calories lessens total amount of milk produced. In other words, you can't engineer milk composition as it comes from the breast by using exotic diets or supplements. We can engineer breast milk content after it is out of the breast, which can be done for babies with chylothorax or as Meier does for premies (measures creamatocrits and gives higher cal breastmilk to baby). That's my simplistic view :-) Pat in SNJ *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
