I too am confused as to how c-sections and how the baby is born in general is totally unrelated to breastfeeding. Can a c-section mom and baby breastfeed successfully? Absolutely, yes. Does it often make things more difficult? Yes. Should we be concerned when OBs treat it like a non-event without serious risks and long term implications? Yes. It is surgery and no surgery should be taken lightly or dismissed as an equal way to give birth. It is a choice just as to breastfeed or not is a choice. However, not all choices are equal and all choices have consequences and benefits. I no longer take so much as an antibiotic without thinking about the implications, benefits, risks and knowing the alternatives. It is important that all people have the unbiased, full truthful information and the decision can be made without question or regret. Whatever decision a woman (and I think personally, partner too) makes is hers to live with. She is the only one who lives in her skin. My concern is that we treat surgical birth like it is a completely safe, no risk procedure for perfectly normal healthy women and change the middle of the pregnancy-birth-breastfeeding-parenting continuum. It will have many more ramifications than we know and we won't know how it will truely effect things for years to come. This is another area (breastfeeding is the other) where we seem reluctant to have a standard or a norm.
