Good morning from sunny (so far this day) Florida, In response to Terriann from Alaska inquiring about GBS as a STD....the answer is at this time the line is No. Here we seem to have a huge group of GBS + patients but there is no accounting as to if its warm tropical enviroment, partner acquired...so unless we start culturing newborn baby girls and see if they "come with it" we can only take the word of the people researching it. There use to be a GBS website, I haven't gone to it in a long time....so you could Goggle it...In childbirth classes I advise them that they should know their status so if they go into labor they can tell the staff so that antibotics can be initiated as soon as possible...it takes 2 doses of Penicillin 4 hours apart to cross the placenta to be considered treated...if Penicillin allergy exists then Clindamycin 900 mg every 8 hrs. So that really keeps our ladies who are positive from staying at home....so consequently we see lots of augmentation of labor and hence cesareans because of failure to progress. So off I go to my girls....I think it was a busy weekend because they called for help, but I was exhausted from the week of 20 deliveries on Tuesday and the aftermath on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday...Thursday no inductions,,,,so probably they played catch up Sat and Sunday. Have a great day.
