Dear Lactnetters, I am at a teacher's conference (Maryland Artist/Teacher Institute) this week on integrating the arts into education. It is a wonderfully powerful workshop incorporating dance, poetry, visual arts, puppetry, drama and music. We have the most amazing artists working with us and teaching us. Anyway...one of the artists, Maria Barbosa, had an exhibit in the spring at the offices of DSHS...Tommy Thompson's domain. The exhibit was detailed embroidery panels of body parts, the brain, a single cell, the heart, a uterus, etc. The work was put up on a Friday when Secretary Thompson was out of the office. On Monday, when he returned to the office, Maria was called and told to remove the entire exhibit. When she got there, the panel with the uterus had been removed (and then quickly rehung when she got there). I am struck by the comparison of the issues at hand...we can't talk about or see breasts and their intended function. Uteri are forbidden as well. I see a bigger issue here than just the Ad Campaign.
