I would be grateful for advice on this one. A mother had her breast abscess drained and irrigated with povidone iodide (Betadine, Iodex, Operand, Pharmadine) two days ago. According to Hale this substance should be used with extreme caution or not at all (L4) to prevent neonatal thyroid suppression. The surgeon says that the mother should not breastfeed for a week but it is not certain whether this time period is evidence based or a shot in the dark. Does anyone have any evidence on how long the milk should be discarded? Many thanks.
