In Netherlands a traditional treatment to earaches is to drop a bit of handwarm oil (kitchen/cooking oil) and fill the ear with a bit of cottonwool. And, like in the UK, Dutch drs are hesitant to give antibiotics unless the earaches do not lessen within a few days. There has been a study that compared Dutch, British and American phycians in the way they treated earinfections. Can't recall who, where and when, but a medscape search will certainly come up with some hits.
